Abstract:
The Shanxi Guild Hall at the Red Gate of Mount Tai is a highly representative one among more than a thousand Shanxi guild halls nationwide dating from the Ming and Qing dynasties. The Shanxi Guild Hall at the Red Gate of Mount Tai was first built in the late Ming period. By the early Qing dynasty, the Red Gate Shanxi Guild Hall system was basically complete, reached its heyday during the Yongzheng-Qianlong period, and gradually declined after the Guangxu period. Its development reflects the basic characteristics and rise and fall of Shanxi merchants’ business activities in the Tai’an region, and also illustrates the interactions between Shanxi merchants and the local society of Tai’an.
