Abstract: There were more differences than consensus between the U.S. and India during the Truman administrations (1945-1953). The two countries held different views of China. These differences were fully exposed during Nehru's visit to the United States and the Korean War. They did not lead to an outright rupture between the two countries, but they laid the fundamental tone of U.S.-India relations. The differences between the two sides are determined by fundamentally different national identity.
