Abstract: As one of the oldest cultural work in China, the Tao Te-Ching has exerted a far-reaching influence on the world as well as on China. During the course of its spreading to foreign countries, translation has played a significant role. In this paper, the author applies cultural schema theory to the analysis of a few examples of culture-loaded words or phrases selected from three great translators' versions from perspectives of cultural schema equivalence, cultural schema conflict and cultural schema default. The author believes that with better recognition of cultural schema and proper translation strategies, the translator can better handle obstacles caused by cultural diversity and thus obtain a satisfactory translation, providing foreign readers an easier and better access to the merits of the Tao Te-Ching.
