Abstract: Consecutive Interpreting(CI) is a multi-task activity in which limited processing capacity is overwhelmingly competed by several tasks involved. Based on the training of non-professional interpreters,an empirical study was conducted to explore the underlying reasons of breaking of effort coordination in CI. Results indicate that there are several factors which affect the allocation of efforts in CI. It is an dynamic and fluctuating process. For the majority of non-professional interpreters, interpreting skills are seen as the main barriers to information processing. Empirical evidence also shows that separate training of interpreting skills is beneficial in upgrading the trainees' processing capacity of individual tasks and optimizing the allocation of limited mental energy.
