The Somber Song for the End of the World: Grass’ Ecological Thoughts in His Warning Novel She-Mouse

  • She-Mouse,one of Grass'novels,is acclaimed as a milestone in German ecological literature. The novel uncovers anti-human and anti-ecology wrong doing by launching a nuclear war during the cold war due to the indifference of the East and West blocks towards the earth's worsening environment and potential destruction confronting human beings. The paper, based on ecological thoughts, analyzes the origin of Grass'ecological pessimism,i.e.rationalism and science supremacy, which turn nature into human beings'enemy. Therefore, the critical way out for human beings ultimately exists in cultivating ecological enlightenment, ecological harmony, ecological justice,as well as adjusting and perfecting themselves so as to be adapted to natural environment. This is the basic prerequisite for harmonious coexistence of human beings and nature.
