Abstract

Fukuzawa Yukichi is a man of controversy in the history of modern Japan.This paper gives an analysis of several factors which till now still have some bearings on the evaluation of Fukuzawa and re-evaluates the roles played by this great man.Fukuzawa Yukichi is a nationalist in the first place,and a democrat in the second place.
