Communicative Functions of Vague Language in Verbal Communication

  • As a conscious form of thinking and means to transmit messages,vague language has its flexible pragmatic functions in verbal communication.Communicators intend to use vague language subjectively and regard vague language as a kind of strategies so as to make expressions euphemistic and reserved.By using vague language speakers can protect himself,and improve the efficiency and flexibility of his expressions.The paper also shows the main expression forms of fuzzy language in verbal communication:vague words whose denotations are not definite,hedges whose job is to make things vague and the vague sentences of subjunctive mood,irony and the sentences with double negative forms.
