Shuli Zhao’s Rural Depiction and His Literary Life

  • The Chinese literature of the 20th century depicted the rural life and farmers with literary imagination from outside, resulting in the concealment and alienation of the genuine life.Shuli Zhao, however, was an exception.Though an intellectual himself,he did not totally accept the discourse system of the intellectuals in the May Fourth Movement.Although within himself he had the values of a Chinese farmer,he was not in its true sense. His writing had made a successful interactive between the farmers and their revolutionary ideology, therefore his works were regarded as literary classics.Later, however,he had to face a lot of difficulties in his literary life due to the discrepancy between his true-to-life writing style and the contemporary art and literature norms.
