On the End Focus of English

  • End focus is a general principle in thearrangement of elements in English. This pper, while examining simple sentences, complex sentences, compound words and various paragrap hs, attempts to look into the patternof end focus. Such analyses confirm this writer in the belief that end focus in English stems from the natural thought pattern of English natives. However, for learners of English as a second language, it takes pains-taking effort to acquire a similar pattern, which is particularly true of Chinese learners of English, who in general have difficulty developing a good sense of the order of increasing importance in English learning. Based on this finding the paper concludes by stressing the necessity and importance of learning to recognize and apply the principle of end focus in our reading and writing in order that we can read more effectively and scan for information quickly and avoid structuring our composition after the model of Chinese thinking pattern.
