On Indeterminacy of Linguistic Meaning——Taking Fuzziness and Ambiguity of Meaning for Example

  • Natural language is the contradictory unity of accuracy and fuzziness, determinacy and indeterminacy. Its numerous words have accurate meanings so that their meanings expressed in sentences are definite. But there are many of its words whose meanings are fuzzy and indefinite in sentences.Structuralism and deconstructionism have different views about whether linguistic meaning is definite or not. This paper demonstrates indeterminacy of linguistic meaning at lexical and syntactic levels, holding the view that indeterminacy of linguistic meaning is mainly embodied in fuzziness and ambiguity of meaning.
