Ideological Researches on the Book of The note of Book of Change

  • As the first official work of the Qing dynasty, the political status and significance of The note of Book of Change is extraordinary. Analyzing the compilation of The note of Book of Change and its style, we can find that its purpose is to be based on the principle of righteousness and compromise, which is the same as the later Imperial Compilation of Zhouyi. Although its academic viewpoints are in the same lineage with the Cheng-Zhu school of reasoning, it is a correction of the science of reasoning. Instead of fully endorsing the idea of Yi as a book of divination, the book proposes that it be set up by the sages for the people, which is very helpful in opposing empty talk about the nature of the mind and advocating practical learning. In terms of governance, it suggests that the ruler needs to improve his own moral character first, to have a heart for the people, and to carry out policies that benefit the people, before he can rectify the world, which is the traditional Confucian rationale of the Sage within and the King without. An in-depth study of the note of Book of Change can help restore the original appearance of Yi-ology in the early Qing dynasty and promote the further development of related research.
