The Transformed Feminist Narrative Voices of the Adapted Film and the Original NovelBased on Little Women (2019)

  • According to the feminist narratology expert Susan Sniader Lancer, the fictional narrative voice in the text can be divided into three types: authorial voice, personal voice, and communal voice. The narrative voice in Little Women (2019) frequently switches between the literary text and the film script, to realize the transformation between the authorial voice and the personal voice. As autobiographical literature, the narrative voice of the original novel Little Women (1868) alternates between the fictional Joe and the real Alcott, which both make the narrative voice diversified. The voices mentioned above, together with the voices of other heroines, construct a communal voice. This thesis aims to, from the perspective of Lancer’s theory, analyze the diversified modern feminist narrative by the interaction of the three types of voice, thus to promote the research of feminist narrative theory.
