Abstract
The novel of Hulan River is a representative work of Xiao Hong, which is a famous Chinese woman writer in the 1930s. It displays many kinds of traditional customs of her hometown, which lies in northeast China. It is not only a painting of local conditions and practices, but also a kind of depicting of the “life phase” among citizens of Hulan River city. Folk culture plays an important role in this novel, such as promoting the development of this novel, shaping characters and setting off the sprits of this city. The folk culture in this novel is completed painfully by the author all under the struggling and conflict between rationality and nostalgia, and it expresses the author’s infinite attachment to her hometown at the same time.
