Reflection on Stephen Owen’s Interpretation of Du Fu’s Poetry

  • Stephen Owen is a representative of contemporary Du Fu research. Starting from the three elements of author, text and context, he deconstructs the traditional Chinese interpretation mechanism−Zhiren lunshi (understanding the text by knowing about the purported author and the time he lives in), and then he opens up new interpretation angles, focuses on marginalized text materials and adopts a narrative strategy of " weakening the attention on genius” to establish his discourse authority. Analysis and reflection of his interpretation mechanism is conducive to preserve the classics.
