On Vietnam Issue During Deng Xiaoping's Visit to USA in 1979

  • Vietnam issue was an important subject during Deng Xiaoping's visit to the United States in 1979. During the talks, Deng Xiaoping briefed the Chinese government's understanding of Vietnam's actions, Vietnam's position in the Soviet strategy, and China's concerns about fighting Vietnam. The US government did not agree with China's idea of fighting Vietnam because of internal affairs and diplomacy, and advised China not to use force against Vietnam. Although there was no agreement on Vietnam between the two high-level officials during Deng Xiaoping's visit to the United States, the mutual understanding laid the foundation for the sound policy by the Carter administration.
