Marta Rojas's Travelling to China & Chinese Writing in The Yellow Suitcase

  • Marta Rojas, one of the most prominent authoresses for her strong sense of social and historical responsibility, has come to China twice in order to promote the cultural exchange between the two countries since 2010. Her classic novel The Yellow Suitcase, against the grand historical background of the traffic in Chinese indentured labor in the second half of the nineteenth century, narrates Chinese coolies transported from China to Cuba by Nicolás Tanco with the aid of his servant Fan Ni, as well as Fan Ni's rebellion and struggle against his master, as a result gradually standing out the little-known history of "the Floating Hell" and the Oriental culture filled with the old charm. By constructing the miserable history of Chinese indentured labor coming to Cuba from "the Floating Hell" and the Chinese cultural elements full of ancient charm, Rojas has accomplished her compatible but real writing about China full of mystery and wisdom, notwithstanding being beleaguered throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century.
