Causal Mechanism of the Success of Building Israeli Democracy

  • The State of Israel built its unicameral democracy at the birth of itself. Historically, however, most of the modern democracies were established through democratic transition or revolution. And a large proportion of democracies the U.S. exported by force ended in failure. In contrast, Israeli democracy was established without any transiting process and was strong enough to survive wars. It also developed and improved itself. By applying process-tracing method to study the history of Israel's establishment, four conditions that contributed to the success of Israeli democracy emerged:consolidation of Zionism, various Jewish communities, the democratic spirit of Ben-Gurion and his colleagues and the restriction to armed conflict. The presence of the four conditions is the internal reason for the success of building Israeli democracy.
