Narrative of Impressionism in The Red Badge of Courage and Border Town
-
Abstract
Literary Impressionism of Stephen Crane and Shen Congwen is the focus of critics in modern literature. Their representative works, The Red Badge of Courage and Border Town are characteristic of grasping color impressions from the perspective of narrative language, of finding stable narrative space in the continuous changes of narrative time and of showing the characters' psychological changes in the similar instant impressions from the perspective of narrative structure, thus subverting the interpretation of the two major ancient literary themes—war and love. Therefore, Literary Impressionism evokes the formation of Literary Modernism in the aspect of impressionistic narrative language, structure and theme.
