From the Monopoly of Power to the Power-sharing:the Reasons to the Institutional Changes of Taiwan's Political Party System

  • The critical period of Taiwan's democratic transition is in 1980s and 1990s. During this period, the political party system of Taiwan gradually changed from Hegemonic party system-the power monopolized by Nationalist party to Two-party system, the power of which is shared by all parties. There are many reasons account to this change. One is the external challenge brought by the improvement of the Sino-US relations, another is the internal shocks caused by the movement of outside the party and the ethnic conflict. One is the inner plight produced by political corruption and the rigid electoral system, another is the dilemma engendered by the conflict between confucian culture and the liberalism. One is the damage generated by the incorrect reform measures implemented by Lee Teng-hui; another is the strike created by the cooperation of the outside forces.
