Box-Behnken Response Surface Method to Optimize the Leaching and Kinetics of Valuable Metals in Electroplating Sludge

  • Based on the Box-Behnken response surface method, the effects of sludge particle size, time, sulfuric acid concentration, liquid-solid ratio and other factors on the metal leaching efficiency in electroplating sludge were deeply studied and optimized. On those basis, the effects of different powers and different times of ultrasonic and hydrogen peroxide addition on the metal leaching rate were deeply discussed. The results showed that under the initial conditions of 25 ℃ and stirring speed of 660 r/min, the optimal reaction parameters were determined as follows: sludge particle size 60 mesh, leaching time 66 min, acid concentration 2.6 mol/L, liquid-solid ratio 8.4 mL/min g, the leaching rate of nickel could reach 93.89%. In addition, by applying 80W ultrasonic external field for 55 min and adding hydrogen peroxide with a liquid-solid ratio of 0.625 mL/g, the leaching rates of Fe, Ni, Cu, and Al increased to 95.71%, 98.56%, 97.31%, and 97.24%, respectively. The kinetic model fitting found that diffusion control was the main control step in the process of sulfuric acid leaching nickel, and the reaction activation energy was 5.131 kJ/mol. XRD and SEM-EDS analysis results showed that the phase of the leaching slag was mainly SiO2 under the above conditions, indicating that the valuable metals in the slag were completely leached, separated and recovered from the electroplating sludge.
