Preparation of Montmorillonite / Epoxy Resin Nanocomposite by Thermal Frontal Polymerization

Abstract
Thermal frontal polymerization (TFP) was used to cure epoxy resin-montmorillonite nanocomposites. The effect of the amount of montmorillonite on the frontal velocity and maximum frontal temperature was investigated. The structure and properties of the cured products were characterized with FTIR and XRD analysis. The results show that, both the frontal velocity and the frontal temperature decreased with the increase of MMT content. The cured products obtained by the TFP method were nearly completely cured. MMT were found to be intercalated or exfoliated, showing an excellent toughing effect to the matrix.
