Abstract:
The establishment of Xiaopeng Academy is an important reform initiative launched by Nanchang Hangkong University in September 2023, aiming at integrating high-quality teaching resources to cultivate aviation talents with outstanding academics, fine learning styles, and perfect overall quality. Taking 193 freshmen enrolled in 2023 in this academy as the research subjects, this study sees into their current situation of learned helplessness and attribution in college English acquisition through a questionnaire survey. The results show that learned helplessness in college English acquisition is a common psychological problem among freshmen, which is characterized by negative feelings and emotions such as annoyance, apathy, despair, decadence, fear, withdrawal, passivity and so on. Through in-depth analyses from the dimensions of behavioral helplessness, cognitive helplessness, emotional helplessness and motivational helplessness, it is found that the causes behind this phenomenon include internal factors such as learning motivation and learning methods, as well as external factors such as pressures from the outside world and the difficulty degree of learning tasks. Therefore, teachers must effectively intervene in students’ learned helplessness under the guidance of Attribution Theory, L2 Self-motivation System Theory and Self-efficacy Theory, so as to reduce the negative impacts of learned helplessness on students, including providing positive attribution training for them, stimulating their learning motivation system and helping them improve their self-efficacy, thus achieving the educational purpose of cultivating their moral character and promoting their personal growth through college English teaching.
