Mechanical Properties of Carbon Fiber Foam Sandwich Structures Under Quasi-static and Dynamic Loading

    • This study investigates the mechanical behavior of carbon fiber-faced foam sandwich composites under quasi-static and dynamic loading, using split Hopkinson pressure bar and universal testing machine experiments. The research aims to develop high-performance structural materials for cross media vehicles. Quasi-static and dynamic compression experiments were conducted, with systematic variations in carbon fiber face-sheet thickness and applied strain rate. The results demonstrate significant strain-rate sensitivity, where both the ultimate compressive strength and energy absorption capacity increase markedly with higher strain rates, particularly in specimens with thicker face sheets. The face-sheet thickness substantially enhances the dynamic compressive strength of carbon fiber-skinned foam sandwich composites, whereas it has a negligible influence under quasi-static conditions, indicating that it is a critical parameter governing the material’s mechanical performance.
