Microstructural Damage Behviour of a Thermal Barrier Coating Fabricated by EB-PVD

Abstract
In this paper, the damage behaviour of a thermal barrier coating(TBC) produced using ED-PVD method was investigated on the basis of microstructure analysis. One of such mechanical loadings as tensile, fatigue, creeping, impact, compression, bending and vibration was separately applied on the TBC specimens in the research. A combination of mechanical loadings with conditions of thermal fatigue, thermal shock or overheating was also used in this investigation. It is found that the damage behaviour of the TBC under these typical conditions can be grouped into 13 categories from the perspective of microstructure. These categories will play a significant role in understanding the failure behaviour of the TBC in complicated servicing environment.
