Failure Analysis of Brass Cartridge

A brass cartridge burst during service. In order to ensure the safety performance of the product and improve its quality, macro and micro observation, metallurgical structure inspection, ammonia test and ultrasonic inspection were carried out to analyze the failure brass cartridge and contrast parts, At the same time, the whole production process was investigated carefully. Finally, the real major cause of the cracking failure was founded. The results show that gas holes caused by the casting procedure may be the main reason for the product failure, and then reasonable suggestions were put forward to improve its quality and safety, such as strictly roasting material, increasing exhaust time, decreasing casting speed, and performing ultrasonic inspections, etc. After half a year's tracking study, it is found that the production rate of the cast billet is significantly improved, and cartridge products with inner crack have not been found again by ultrasonic inspection.
